Making Crayons

We tried out making homemade crayons the other day.. Everything went well, despite the fact that I was using an ice cube mold. Hey, whatever works, right? :) Bean helped me remove the paper from all her old, broken crayons and then enjoyed breaking them some more so they were smaller pieces. Munchkin ran off with a few and coloured on some paper while we did all the work. Then I brought out the molds and they filled them with crayons. They stood them up so we could fit more in.

We baked them in the oven at 220 degrees Fahrenheit for a little over 10 minutes (or until the wax is melted). Then we set them out to cool for a bit while the kids played with Lego's. Once they were completely cool, I popped them out of the molds and put them on a styrofoam tray.

I gave the kids a piece of paper each and they explored their new crayons for a couple minutes before they started to colour with them. They loved the new shapes and now regular crayons are too boring for them.

They produce the same quality of colour and texture as regular crayons, with the added effect of various colours mixed in.
