Felt Chocolate Bunnies

Update: Our Felt Chocolate Bunnies are now available in our Etsy store!

Have you seen our Easter Eggs and Woven Baskets that I made out of felt? They were so easy to make and have been so much fun to play with! Munchkin and Bean love using them for pretend play and hiding them to find and delivering them to special people. And to complete the baskets... here is another easy felt craft! How cute are these chocolate Easter bunnies?

First I searched on Google until I found a template I liked (this one, just scroll down until you see it) and then I used Paint to resize it a few times. I wanted to make a mama, papa and two baby bunnies family set. But I kept in mind that I was going to be stitching around the edge and needed to make sure I'd still have enough room to add some stuffing. The mama and papa bunnies are the same height, but the papa bunny is wider and the two babies bunnies are the same size. I wanted to add some details, like embroidering eyes, but I decided to keep it plain and simple.

You'll need:
Felt (we used dark brown felt)
Embroidery floss (we used dark brown)
Embroidery needle
Polyester fiberfill (AKA stuffing)
Disappearing ink pen or Pins (to either trace the template or pin it to cut around)
Fabric scissors
Template or draw your own (or freely cut, but you'll need to make sure the two sides line up exactly)

I printed the template in three sizes and cut each one out (I save all cut-out templates for future projects, just in case). Then I held them to the brown felt and used a disappearing ink pen to trace around them. You could pin the cut-out to the felt instead, if that is easier for you. But I typically have kids running around me, so I limit how many sharp objects I'm dealing with. Once they were all cut-out I measured out the thread. Regardless of the size of the project, I use the same size length and just add a new thread when I need one. I just hold out my arms and use a length that is fingertip to fingertip. Then I separate out one thread and thread both ends through the eye of the needle, which leaves a loop at the end. I sewed along the edge and added stuffing when there was only an inch left and then finished up sewing. Refer to this post or this post for a tutorial on a blanket stitch, which is the stitch I use for my felt creations. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message or leave a comment!

Here are the adorable baby bunnies!

The baby bunnies were the perfect size for the baskets. The five eggs and bunny fit comfortably in the basket (there are two sets, one for each child). The eggs are 2 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide in the middle. The baby bunnies are 5 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. Mama bunny is 8 1/2 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. Papa bunny is 8 1/2 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide. The sides of the basket measure about 3 inches wide and is about 3 inches tall. It was loosely woven.

Bean wanted to create a stage for the Bunny Family (are puppets and an actual stage in our future? most likely) and set them up using our felt boards and train table. We gave papa bunny a big red bow. (And as you can see, I used the same template for all of them, I just adjusted the sizes.)

Then Bean added clouds and some grass and a flower. Munchkin wanted some eggs in the picture. (They love when I take pictures while they play, so they will literally "set the stage".)

Easter will be lovely this year! The eggs and bunnies came out so cute! I cannot wait to set them up on Easter morning with their baskets!

These chocolate bunnies can be used for decorations, but we will mainly be using them for Easter themed pretend play and small world play. Munchkin and Bean like pretending to "buy" the chocolate bunnies in their pretend bakery or baking them in their kitchen to "make" them. I created the below picture on PicMonkey (you can click on the link if you wish to print it) for their pretend play bakery. This way Bean can practice writing and spelling and it's just a cute addition to their bakery. It's laminated so that it's sturdy and they can create recipes as many times as they want.

The bunnies also enjoyed delivering Easter eggs in a construction truck. :)

I can't wait to make an Easter themed felt board next! I think I'll aim for a "design your own egg" type of felt board, with a few big eggs and lots of removable pieces. How does that sound?
