Fascinating Education Review

We received a full year of online access to Fascinating Education's Fascinating Biology course to review. They have two other courses available: Fascinating Chemistry and Fascinating Physics. These courses are intended to be used by middle school and high school students, however an adult or younger child could still certainly use the courses. As my children are much too young for the Fascinating Biology course, I used the course.

About the creator of Fascinating Education:

Dr. Margulies is a neurologist who created a unique science curriculum for middle school and high school students. Being a neurologist, he understands how the brain works; including how we learn, how we focus our attention, how we retrieve information, and how emotion and motivation affect learning. He used this knowledge to create three engaging audiovisual science courses for students: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Dr. Margulies is the author of The Fascinating Body - How it Works, Everyday Doctoring, and Learning Law - The Mastery of Legal Logic.

It has been several years since I last sat in a biology lab, though luckily biology was one of my favorite classes, and I retained much of what I learned. I used the course mainly to brush up on my biology knowledge, especially because science is my daughter's favorite subject and she always has questions. Occasionally I don't have an answer. But one of the parts of homeschooling that I like most is re-learning information and/or learning new stuff, while teaching my children.

Fascinating Education Review

One of the great aspects of this course is that you do not need any prerequisite knowledge of biology. The course will teach you the basic principles of biology. They will learn the components of life: cell membranes, nutrients, chemical energy, growing, repairing, reproducing, maintaining stable internal environments, and adapting to external environments. Check out the course outline to learn more about what is included in the Fascinating Biology course.

The lessons are set up in a table and there are 19 lessons total. You can easily navigate between the different lessons. Each lesson comes with a text script and a test. Parents and teachers can download the tests and answer sheets if they would like them hand-written. I honestly skipped over the tests because I never much liked them growing up.

Fascinating Education Review

I watched the video lessons using my laptop and typically viewed the text scripts on my tablet or in another tab (some people may prefer to print them for notes, but I prefer to save paper). The scripts go over each slide in the lesson. You can find each part of the lesson in the menu, which makes it really easy to find where you left off.

For those inclined to take the tests, they are quite straight-forward. You can find the questions in order under the menu (on the left). Simply select "submit" when you have chosen your answer and it will move you on to the next question.

Here are a few sneak peeks at the Chemistry and Physics courses! Surprisingly I never took Chemistry or Physics in high school. I was enrolled in both, but due to the large size of the class, they ended up cutting random students from the class. Once again, another great reason for why we homeschool: we love the convenience of choosing our own curriculum. We can learn whatever we want, when we want.

Our overall opinion is that Fascinating Education provides a wonderful science curriculum for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The courses are engaging, the lessons are easy to learn and if your child or student works at their own pace, they will not feel pressured when taking the tests. I would definitely recommend this program to middle school or high school students who want to learn more about science!

Fascinating Biology is available for $79. You'll have access to the course for a full year. You can purchase a combination of two courses for $125. The best deal by far is their triple combo option - Biology, Chemistry and Physics for $175 and it gives you full access for two full years! If you have multiple students in different grades that is definitely the best option.

Usborne Book Review

We received these books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

You may remember back in September when I mentioned the Usborne booth we saw at the Yankee Doodle Homecoming. That day we came home with some awesome new products from Usborne and were given a number to contact for opportunities with Usborne. Well, needless to say, a month later after tossing the idea around, we decided to become independent consultants as well! We are so happy to work with such a wonderful company that does their very best to bring books into the lives of children!

I am so excited to partner with Heather McConley, an Usborne book representative, to bring you a book review! The books we choose are perfect for children in preschool-kindergarten or older.

About Heather:

I grew up in Washington state, but moved out to New England in 1994, and love it here.  I am an experienced mom (kids are now 12 & 15), and my family is a family of geeks. We watch Doctor Who and Sherlock, and play tabletop games for fun, among other things. I read voraciously too, garden, and volunteer at our church and at the kids' schools, in addition to working from home. I've been with Usborne for over 8 years, and my kids have grown up with Usborne, since I started having parties and falling in love with the books when they were 1 & 4. I love helping kids love reading. I love preschoolers best of all, and love helping families learn more about how to encourage their children. Usborne has given me tons of "extra" benefits -- in addition to a huge home library and an extra family income, I have earned 2 trips and 2 iPads, in addition to being part of President's Club and earning national awards.

To stay up to date in the Usborne world, follow Heather's WonderFunBooks Facebook page. To order books, sign up to host a party, or sign up as a representative, visit her WonderFunBooks Usborne page.

About Usborne:

Usborne Books and More offers all kinds of unique children's books, learning materials and fun products, from flash cards to board games! In addition to offering these books for sale, you can also host parties (online or in person) to earn free books, or even start your own business by becoming an Usborne independent consultant and earn extra income! Usborne offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a lifetime 50% replacement policy when bought through a consultant. That means if your little one rips off the flaps or the book has been so well loved and has clearly seen better days, simply contact your consultant and they will help you replace the book at 50% the original price!

We have been reading Usborne books since the kids were young, starting with the That's Not My... series, other touchy-feely books (great for sensory exploration) and the My First Books series. Then we moved up to the early readers and phonics books. We especially love the lift-flap books, bedtime story books, illustrated dictionaries and beginner books, based on popular themes, like pirates and firefighters!

We are homeschoolers and absolutely love Usborne's educational books and products! So when we were given the opportunity to review a handful of books from Usborne, we had a good idea of which ones we wanted to add to our home library: science books! Science is one of my children's favorite subjects and Usborne has so many science books to choose from, including illustrated dictionaries, experiment books, activity books and even a few lift-flap books!

I actually remember growing up with the Starting Point Science series, so it was really exciting to bring the first volume home to my kids! I truly hope Usborne decides to release new editions of the other volumes in the series. Otherwise they would be next to impossible to find, since they were originally published in 1989. Regardless, Usborne has plenty of other science books for inquisitive children to read and learn from!

Starting Point Science Volume 1 is a great beginner book for young children who ask lots of questions! Children will learn about nature, science and technology, while the book answers some common questions: What makes it rain? What makes a flower grow? Where does electricity come from? and What's under the ground? So if your kids are wondering where the water goes after it rains or how light bulbs work, this book will answer their questions! Starting Point Science offers tons of useful facts, information, and even some activities and experiments!

Illustrated Elementary Science Dictionary is one of Usborne's many illustrated dictionaries and we love it! Normal dictionaries are so plain and boring, and rarely go into much detail, apart from the bare minimum of facts. This book, however, goes into great detail about many science terms and makes it so much easier for children to understand. And one of the many great features of this book is that it will always be up-to-date, because it is linked to Usborne's Quicklinks website. That means that certain pages may direct you to the Quicklinks website for additional information on the subject. And many of the pages have helpful notes at the bottom of the page that will direct you to other pages to explain more of the terms used. This dictionary is perfect for children ages 8+.

The First Illustrated Science Dictionary would be ideal for children ages 6+ and the Illustrated Dictionary of Science is perfect for children ages 12 and up.

One of our favorite Usborne books is Look Inside Our World, which is basically a smaller version of See Inside Planet Earth. The big book goes into more details and both are unique. Having two books like this is especially useful when you have multiple kids, this way there's less chance of an accident if both kids are cramming to open the same flap. :)

See Inside Planet Earth introduces children to the interesting world we live in. There are over 80 flaps to lift and learn more. This book goes over earth in space, environmental issues, like climate change and our responsibilities to live greener, and explores our watery world, different climates and some basic geography. The kids can spend hours pouring over this book, asking questions and practicing to read and love learning more each day about our planet!

All three of these books instantly became the source of many questions and inspired multiple learning activities. We loved reading them and look forward to adding more Usborne books to our home library!

If you are interested in purchasing Usborne books, please visit our store. If you would like to host a party or join, feel free to contact me for more details!

Disclosure: I am an Independent Consultant for Usborne Books and More. If you make a purchase through the links provided on this post, myself or Heather will make a small commission from the purchase (which will not effect your price). Thank you for supporting small businesses!

On Beyond Zombie Linky Party #7 - Lego Creative Play

Welcome back to the On Beyond Zombie Linky Party! This week we are taking a break from Super Heroes (*gasp* I know, right?) to talk about Lego's. Playing with Lego's may not seem important, but it is. Not only do Lego's promote creativity, but they help to promote fine motor skills, language skills, cognitive skills, problem solving skills, patterning practice, sorting skills, and hand-eye coordination, among many others! And don't forget the numerous open-ended play opportunities! We use Lego's daily in our homeschool, to teach math, language arts, and simply playing with them teaches them the three dimensions of physics! Lego has been, and always will be, one of our staples for creative play.

It came to my (shocked) attention last week that my daughter did not feel comfortable creating with Lego's unless she had very specific parts or directions. Both of my children have sort of out-grown DUPLO's and have moved on to the smaller, more complicated and creative pieces. Honestly we only own a few sets, and they each build a type of vehicle or prop for the vehicles. However, that still leaves hundreds of pieces of various colors, shapes and sizes.

Munchkin has very little difficulty using the small Lego's, despite being 3 and "too young," based on the age range on the boxes, which is usually 6-10. He's been playing with Lego's since his birthday in August and has really taken an interest in creating his own unique vehicles.

Bean on the other hand, will only touch them if she has picture directions or a very specific design in mind. That means that if, for instance, she wants to build a car, she will double check with me every other minute about the parts a car needs. How many tires? How many windows? How many seats? On and on and on, until she is satisfied with the car. And believe me, it has to look like a realistic car, otherwise she will tear it apart and start over.

One of the things we do at tea time is to create something. Usually I'll tell an original story, or ask them if they'd like to share one of their own stories. Lately Bean has taken to telling jokes. I've now added an additional activity to the routine, which is to create something out of Lego's. They are already in the mood to create something, so it has been an easy addition. All I do is set up the Lego's in a big bowl, and we all sit together and create something. Sometimes together and sometimes on our own. We might decide on a theme (Firetruck, fly, house, etc.) and all try to create something that fits the theme. Munchkin digs right in, finds all the pieces he wants and begins building. Bean takes her time and asks questions and requests suggestions. I'll ask her things like, "what do you want to make?" "what color is it?" "what pieces do you need?" "what is its purpose?" I try not to be intrusive and let her own imagination guide her. If she needs help, I'll suggest pieces, like wheels if it moves or quarter circle pieces if she's trying to make wings.

Here are some of our creations for Fly.

Mine: I'm not even sure what it is, but it's a little building with 3 doors and one wall of windows, and Yoda is standing inside. It's a helicopter of some sort... And the kids were fascinated with it!

Here's Bean's plane! After she was done with it, Munchkin picked it up and made many changes to it. (As seen in the pictures below.)

Here's another one of Bean's, this one is a sort of hover craft.

And here is Munchkin's wild creation. He built it upon Bean's original plane design. It's a plane, with extending wings made out of fire truck ladders. It also spins. So perhaps it's also a helicopter, except that pilot will be especially dizzy.

No one said it had to make sense.

Later Bean created a bath tub. It also spins, and half of the pieces are actually upside down.

It's pretty busy, but looks comfortable enough.

The original plane underwent more variations the next morning. This time with friends!

As I type this, Munchkin's already working on creating something new. This one is a sort of transport vehicle, though only about half finished.

(Please keep in mind that just because Munchkin is able to safely play with Lego's, that does not mean other 3 year olds are. Please use your own judgement when introducing Lego's to young children. Keep a close eye on them so no accidents happen.)

This weeks features are: Teaching Kids About Inventions from Planet Smarty Pants and Slippery Squishy Spooky Slime from The Science Kiddo!
